Bestor Architecture has developed a new headquarters for Beats Electronics located in Culver City, California. Beats Electronics, formally established in 2008, has developed a unique approach to enjoying music that goes beyond their premium headphones, earphones, and speakers to a fully integrated software and music streaming experience. Purchased by Apple in 2014, the company’s innovative products and services complement and expand the capabilities of Apple’s iTunes.
Howard Building Corporation began work on Beats’ corporate headquarters prior to the Apple purchase and continues to provide construction services for the quickly growing company. In partnership with Bestor Architecture, HBC constructed the original 50,000 square foot adaptive reuse project that established the Beats headquarters in Culver City, California. Three buildings were interconnected to accommodate the company’s research, design and development teams. Since that time, HBC has completed more than 110,000 square feet of space on the expanding campus.
With a youthful, creative staff, the design of the space provides a working environment that fosters the company’s adaptive and technologically advanced culture. Rich in amenities and non-traditional, collaborative spaces, Beats pushes the “creative space” paradigm. Not only does it include a café, gym, locker rooms, four barista stations, outdoor lounges and multiple social hubs, there is also a mixing studio and a cutting edge acoustical testing lab that supports the engineering of Beats products.
Finishes include large areas of rich blue and red painted walls, graphic wall coverings, metal and wood wall panels, and wood and concrete flooring. Custom designed built-in furniture and millwork create many of the collaborative meeting spaces, and unique, sculptural light fixtures punctuate both intimate meeting rooms and expansive atriums. Four separate interconnecting stairways link the first and second floors. Frameless doors disappear into the walls, and windows seem to be portals between spaces held within large scale, geometric frames.
Beats Electronics’ vibrant and edgy headquarters reflect a company setting the bar for the future. As technology pushes the boundaries of what is possible, their space reflects a culture that embraces the opportunity to see just how far that can go.
